Final Days of Preschool at Gardenview Montessori

Hard to believe their very first school year has come to an end. Jonas has grown just under 2 inches and gained 3 lbs since fall. Jember has grown over 2 inches an put on 5 pounds!

Guess they are growing!

Jonas loved school this year. He is still my little scientist. He loves a challenge and will work it through til the end. He has quite the grasp on numbers and letters. He is seriously one of the fastest learners I have ever known. I think he will be reading before long. His language skill have really developed. He is able to communicate with much clearer language, and boy does he like to explain things to you! He tells me that he wants to learn to play the drums "like Freddy in School of Rock." And this kid plays a MEAN set of air drums.

Favorite pastime however remains sports. He loves playing games (baseball, darts, online sports, golf... you name it!) He has even started asking to watch baseball on t.v. The other day he and I caught a rugby match between Samoa and New Zealand on ESPN. He loved it!

He makes friends very easily. His best buddy this year was a boy named Ashwin. (Called him his "brother") Ashwin and Jonas were inseperable. We called them the "little intellectuals." Sadly, Ashwin and his family moved away at the end of this school year!

His other buddy was Ty. Ty was his "baseball guy" as Jonas calls him. Jonas loves play dates with Ty  too.  Ty has 3 brothers and its quite the "baseball-o-rama" when they are all together!

Jember took longer to get into school. The large montessori class was a bit anxiety producing for her.  We sensed a bit of stress in her early on and after several months of stomach aches, emotional outbursts and declarations of her dislike for preschool, we figured something wasn't working for her in the classroom. Upon investigation, we discovered that the 2 women who taught at the preschool had a lot of tension between them over how things should be run. One of them actually left mid year.  Sensing the tension, I believe created a lot of unease in her.  Since that upheaval has settled down, so in turn, has Jember.

She loves painting letters the her name. She is most attracted to the letter "J." Maria (our nanny) has helped take a pro-active approach to letters. One day is "B" day and they made bread together. One day was "N" day (nails) and they went off and got pedicures together.  The alphabet is taking shape for her, thanks to the beautiful ideas of a gifted and caring nanny.

I think my favorite part of preschool this year is all the new songs. Jonas loves the "Recycling" song and "Tell Me the Continents."  He will burst in to these 2 songs often, making sure he hits every verse.
(And he knows about recycling and can name all of the continents! Cool huh?)

Jember loves singing too. And after a year of loving shows like: "Mary Poppins" and "Mama Mia" and  "The Wizard of Oz" she not only sings but sings in her little vibrato voice. (And she sings on pitch!) She loves making up her own songs and and dances. She performs them in the living room and in the front yard. She has a remarkable imagination. She is strong willed, determined and has a crackling sense of language. She weaves words together like a teenager. She can sound wry, funny, witty, sarcastic and the other day was talking to me in a British dialect!

The happiest day for Jember was the day we took her to a face painter. She wore a butterfly on her face for 3 days before it had to be washed off. She is counting the days until her next trip to a face painter.

She tells me she misses ballet. We may get her started in the fall again.

Her favorite 2 friends still remain Maiya (her soul sister) and a 5-year old neighborhood girl named Tori.

We all still read every night. We have SO many favorite books that I have lost track!

We won't be returning to Gardenview Montessori next year. We have learned a lot but have decided to switch our courses to a new school. Next year they will be attending Samish Preschool!  I am so incredibly proud of these two.

Pre-K on the horizon. But for now...

Summer vacation please!

Springtime in Bellingham

Happy Spring.

I'm paused here with a cup of tea, sifting through the pictures of the last couple of months. Its nap time, which means I can just get a few thoughts down before 2 "hatchlings" tumble out of their sleepy nests and climb into my lap, their bodies still warm and sleepy from their afternoon slumber. (Oh...I love that moment.)

They'll take a few quiet moments of interest in my pictures, and then they are going to insist that they move on.  That I move on.  Or move over. (Jonas is the master of online sports games. Hockey, golf, baseball...you name it.) Or they will want me to listen to their songs and stories  (Jember will want to sing something for me and she will probably hand out tickets. Seriously. ) Jonas may want me to pitch him a few balls in the front yard. Or perhaps I will be requested for a bike ride. (Which we are working on...with a "scoot" and/or with training wheels.) Letters will be drawn on chalkboards, chalk drawings will be created on our sidewalks and little imps will be trying to tickle me when I am not looking, screaming in delight when I shriek after someone has placed icy fingers under my shirt or on my bare toes.

Or they will catch the sound of nearby neighborhood kids playing and in a great whoosh, will be out the door,  running with friends in sprinklers, racing on tricycles, and exploring the tent that has recently been assembled in the back yard.

And then I experience that new feeling. The oddness of my children zooming outside to play with friends, leaving me here to do the oddest of things: like talk to my husband, or read a book, or to sit (yes sit) for minutes at a time with the strange, strange sound of quiet.

Wierd.

So...Spring.

I always think of Spring as starting with Easter and sort of mucking its way along (through heavy dark days and startling bursts of sunshine.) Its not like:

"Hey look at the bunnies and chickies and the whole world is coming alive" kind of a thing.

No. Pacific Northwest springs are like:

"Hey. I saw a slug today. Spring must be returning."
or
"Hey, weird. I saw the sun last Wednesday. Crazy.  Spring must be here."
or
"The moss is turning lighter. The mold is spreading. Groovy. Spring must be here..."

(Ok. Ok. And the fact that everything is green. That insane amounts of flowers are blooming and the cottonwoods are filling the air with sweet scents and my high school students are staring at each other with that giddy look that tells me to wear a raincoat when I walk through the hallways. Seriously.)

We're wrapping up a school year. (Thank God.) The kids spend their weeks in preschool and hanging out with the amazing Maria - nanny and friend extraordinaire. Maria is an adventurer taking the kids to parks, on bike rides, fishing, and out to lunches. With Maria they create art, bake cookies and are learning to love letters. We love Maria!

Maria and the kids hangin out on Bellingham Bay.

Spring has sprung. And we are having all kinds of fun. Check it out:

WIth the help of Maria, they made these 2 cakes...and put the candles on...and the 7 inches of sprinkles and frosting...they were SO proud!

Yep. We love spring. And the ONLY thing that can top this giddy springtime feel-good feeling is the thought of SUMMER!!!!!!!!

And its coming. And these 2 burned out school teachers and our silly fun kids couldn't be more ready!

Hopefully we'll see you round the hood this summer! Come on by. We'll have your favorite beverages chilling, the hammock up and swinging, firewood just waiting for bonfires, and the grill always at the ready. Bring it SUMMER!!

4 years old!

"Cars" and "Princess" cake was the request this  year!

January 20th, 2012. Jonas and Jember turned 4-years old. We took our party to "Time and Play" in Bellingham and invited so many of our closest friends and family. In a tumbled ruckus we came together, bearing cake and gifts and so much energy. There was a lot of laughing and colored paper. A lot of cake and lemonade. And that feeling of love, that circles around us from so many of our dearest friends. How lucky are we, to have such wonderful friends to celebrate these 2 funny, creative and electric souls.

How lucky are we to have Jonas and Jember in our lives?

The Holidays

I'm sitting here at my desk, sifting through the last few months of photos. A couple of things are crossing my mind.  First, I am REALLY behind with my blog posts. Yikes. Where has time gone?

Second, I cannot believe how much my kiddo's are growing and changing. There are days, when Ross and I look at each other and say, "Who ARE these people?" It makes me wonder if other parents feel this way. Who are those two people running around in the front yard, talking a million miles an hour? Who are these two imps, begging me to watch and witness every other thing, asking me questions, showing me their treasures, telling me their jokes and expressing their opinions on everything from breakfast cereal to bubble bath? Who are these people? And where did those tiny little babies go? Anyone?

In big news: they have started preschool 3 days a week. They come home now sharing stories of new friends,  singing songs, and holding armfuls of artwork that can't wait to make its way on to our fridge. Jonas has become my sports kid. He can spend hours in the yard with baseball and bat, taking practice swings that send baseballs sailing into the neighbors yard. He bowls in our hallway and has invented a gentle version of indoor lacrosse. He is fascinated by numbers, letters and is already spelling his name and writing out letters on chalkboards. His absolute hero is Sportacus from Lazytown.

Jembers language skills are off the charts. Most days, I feel like I am talking to an adolescent. Her use of wit and her flair towards the dramatic is pretty unreal. She still loves singing and playing dress up. And please, come on in!  Our little social butterfly will serve you up a cup of imaginary tea or a plate of freshly baked imaginary cake. And oh! She has succombed to the world of the princess. Loves watching them, reading about them, and pretending to be them. She recently started a little ballet class at the YMCA. And if you have never watched a little class of 4-year olds twirling around in their pinkest of tutu's on a Saturday morning, you honestly have not lived.

Jember in ballet class

Jonas rock climbing at the YMCA

Both kids continue to love painting, books and helping cook in the kitchen.  They are quite the little cookie bakers!

And speaking of cookies, the holiday season sort of flew by, didn't it?  It seems like just yesterday we were tree trimming, hanging lights, and sitting cross- legged on the kitchen floor (for our annual floor picnic) getting ready to savor the first holiday batch of molasses cookies that came out of the oven.

But, now the new year has been rung in, and we find ourselves dropped most unceremoniously on the doorstep of a late January chill.

A stolen moment. Beautiful child in the sunshine...loving the artwork she just drew on her arm...
Ah well.  As we brush the holiday sparkle and remnants of mistletoe off of our sweaters, we snuggle down with our mugs of hot cocoa and our cherished pictures.

Here's a glimpse of the last few months:

Its been a busy and joyous holiday season. It passed by so quickly. I'm surprised we were able to grab the camera as often as we did. Where ever you spent your time and whomever you spent it with, we hope your holidays were a joyous one, spent embracing the people that you love most.

And now these little imps will be turning 4! Stay tuned for birthday updates!
