Thanksgiving

We are on our way to Seattle.

Its the day before Thanksgiving and our car is packed with suitcases, bags of snacks, and a bowl of Ross's famous cranberry pear salad. The car is humming with happy music, the smell of cheese and crackers and the anticipation of a holiday that will be spent with Ross's family: parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and all the rest.

We are in weary, good moods. Traveling to Seattle for the weekend is a break. Behind us we leave the usual chaos. No matter how much we clean, there are always corners of dishevelment in our house. Sigh. The cluttered home, the pile of unfinished laundry and the clouds of stress that our jobs create. Breathe in. I close a fall play. Breathe out. We post grades for another grading period. Breathe In. Don't forget to pay bills. Breathe out. We need to buy new tires for the car. Breathe In. Need to get packed for our weekend. Breathe out. The kids are "helping" pack their own suitcases. I notice a lot of pajamas and single socks going in . Hmmm.

We anticipate the Thanksgiving holiday that lies before us as we drive down the road. His aunt and mother have prepared a joyful feast. The kitchen is already bursting with pies, homemade breads, and the promise of stuffings, potatoes, and green beans. They are excited to see the kids, more loving arms to hold the little ones.

Breathe In. It is a weekend to catch our breaths, maybe even sneak off to see the latest Harry Potter movie. Breathe Out. Popcorn may be involved.

As for me, I love Thanksgiving. Its my favorite holiday hands down. And really, I'm not sure what I love more. Spending the day in my slippers, watching those silly parades, burning candles and saying prayers for loved ones who no longer live on this earth, or the cornacopia of endless spices and warm scents that fill the air, the busy kitchen overflowing with so much activity that it seems to vibrate its own energy.

Hey look.
Most of the time...our lives look and feel a lot like this...
I mean, we are two working teachers, balancing the demands of our jobs with the demands of parenthood. It isn't always easy. Ok. Its almost never easy.

But at the end of our weekend, we are once again returned to Bellingham. I find myself nestled on the couch with my family. We are cozied under a blanket with a stack of books between us. Winnie the Pooh and Mrs. Rumphius await. Its just us. The four of us and a the familiar stories that we love. The soft rhythm of words draw us in. Mrs. Rumphius is beginning to plant those lupine seeds, making the world a more beautiful place. I pause a minute. Taking a breath between my words to take in this moment. Holding this moment of closeness. Of the togetherness. The blessed ties that bind. I look down at these children, my own lupines.

Oh. How they make the world a better place.

I feel my son lean his head against my chest. "Family." he says softly. "Family."

And that is when the real Thanksgiving occurs. Quietly with no other words, it is spoken. We are thankful. Thankful for this family.

For our love

for our joy

and for the sense of wonder that fill us up each day

Mostly, we are thankful for the picture that is us.
Our family.

Together.

From the deepest places in our hearts we hope your Thanksgiving was a lovely one and that your Advent is full of quiet miracles.

Halloween 2010

Oh we love Autumn. Carving pumpkins, roasting pumpkin seeds, and taking long walks in the colorful leaves that line our streets are treasured pastimes. I am drawn back to my lap loom, and spend my evenings after the little ones are tucked in, weaving colors and drinking hot tea. We unpack the fuzzy robes and funny hats, and look forward to wearing them in the chilly air.

Sporting our fall fashions...

(Shirley Temple ain't got nothin on my Jember...)

(Daddy's hat completes any fall fashion, really.)

Fuzzy fall jammies. Is there anything better?

Carving Pumpkins (which was carved to look like Bert, the muppet. Ross did a great job. But, getting there was really most the fun.)

Ewwwwwwww. Pumpkin Guts!

Halloween Night! Getting ready to go trick or treating for the first time!

Puppy helps dragon with his wings. Good dog.

We go trick or treatin in our little neighborhood, then take the kids back down to our old neighborhood (Fairhaven) to visit old friends. It was SO much fun!!!

All in all, a GREAT autumn...and a really fun Halloween. Jember fell asleep holding tight to her Halloween cards from her grandma's and Jonas' last words as he drifted off were: "Fun day. Fun day..."

They are growing so fast. I can't believe it.

Oh. Before I go. We have an introduction to make! Autumn brought us something else (besides dragons, puppies and Bert pumpkins...)

Please welcome into our family: "Izzy -bop and Charlie Bug" (Ok ok. Izzy and Charlie)

We love them a lot. They are funny, energetic and very loving kittens (litter mates) who fill our house with a special kind of zany energy that only kittens can bring.
2 kittens. 2 awesome kids.
2 is a magic number. A really, really, magic number.

Happy Autumn, one and all!!!

Hooray for Autumn!

October Greetings!!!

Hey. What was that blinding color of flash and light?

Not sure. But we think it was summer. It flew up and into the air, like some exotic bird, flapping her wings madly to catch a brief but glorious view of sky. Summer reverie.

Glimpses of our summer...

hammock time at Sue and Shirley's

Kayaking on Holland Lake, Montana.

Puddle jumping!

Popsicles!! All day...any day. Snack of choice. Breakfast of champions.

And wonderful time spent with grandparents both in Wisconsin and Montana. (pictures coming!) (Sorry! A certain little boy discovered my camera and deleted all summer photos!)

But no matter how deep our hopeful sighing, summer drew to a close. Ross and I begrudgingly returned to our classrooms. Barely a blink of an eye, and our summer of the eternal Popsicle melted. Enter autumn - which had been waiting very patiently and VERY closely, in the wings this summer. Her damp anxious breath and heavy dark clouds barely needing any coaxing out at all, really. Blammo. Autumn rains take center stage. Which was a relief to the summer rain. She needed a break, I guess.

Some people I know were really excited about the change of seasons..
.

And when Autumn rains decided to take a little break, we head for our canoe. Who couldn't be excited about a Chaney canoe float? Wildcat Cove on a beautiful Saturday afternoon...

Daddy pointing out flora, fauna and wild critters

Camouflage seagulls

Autumn colors creeping into the pacific northwest

No canoe float is complete until Jojo can throw rocks for a while. Happy boy. And an end to a perfect afternoon.

And of course, another yearly trip to our favorite pumpkin patch
!

Peering at animals at the petting farm...

We've grown since last year!

Taking a break with hot dogs, pie and hot chocolate

Not sure what to make of the saddled, metal, thing...

Surprise!

Woah! Check it out!!

Happy with their pumpkins.

So much ahead. Pumpkin carving, costume parties, gatherings of good friends in our new warm house, and the bright lights of the holidays await.

On a somber note, we grieve our losses too. 2 weeks ago, our beloved cat Fozwig, cherished companion and forever friend lost his battle with illness. We lost him on a Sunday night, and buried him under an elder tree in our front yard on Monday. I am slightly comforted to know that he is still near us. Though our house feels a little more empty, our lives will be forever blessed to have known him and to have held him in our lives for 13 years.

Safe journeys Fozwig.

And blessings to everyone for a wonderful autumn.
